SSA for 2010

Dodge County Horseman’s Association

After much discussion, debate, and soul searching at our September meeting, the members present decided to suspend our Benefit Stallion Service Auction & Futurity at this time. We have had ten very good and successful years, a whole decade of horse folks helping people in need, but in light of the present economy and horse population situation, the program “will be put on the back burner”. When the horse industry and economy improve, we can review the situation again. DCHA will have a Weanling Futurity Class at our show in August 2010 for the babies from this year’s auction, and will still run our Open Stakes classes at the show. The Tack Swap will still be held on February 7th 2010 at the Juneau Community Center, with our “Famous Breakfast” and we will still have a Silent Auction Fundraiser and select a Beneficiary for the proceeds. We may even expand the Auction, with the help and generous donations from the Horse Community. Stallion owners may still promote their Stallion by donating a service, mare care, or some other arrangement to their liking. Trainers, or anyone in the “Horse Service” industry, you too could donate services, products, time, etc. to our Auction. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to donate, or come and be a bidder! We will try to promote donors as much as and anywhere we can. DCHA would like to thank all of the Stallion Service donors, some of whom have been with us for all ten years, without your generosity this great Benefit would never have been possible. Mare owners who bought services also get a big round of applause. The Wisconsin State Horse Council was also a major supporter of the Benefit SSA by granting us sponsorships to use for expenses and part of the paybacks. And who could forget Colonel Bob Wedel, who always kept his Auction calendar open for us every first Sunday in February. Bob always kept the Auction fun and interesting! And finally, to all the volunteers who “made it work”, especially Diane Sackett, Kevin & Jenny Juliuson (SSA) and Jan Pieper (Tack swap) who have been involved from the very beginning. Thanks to all! See you next February !
Sincerely,

Lori Helmer

New Business - SSA 2010 - discussion about personnel needed to run the SSA including ad prep, stallion info, contracts and catalog setup. A suggestion for ads was to do an ad packet for the year which would include calendar, SSA catalog, shows and Tack Swap. It should be distributed in January for budget purposes.

NBHA Show - need to put stakes in ground with a piece of rope attached for barrel placement. This year all checks made out to DCHA and then Bonnie will forward payments.

Banquet will be at Juneau Community Center with available dates of Nov. 1, 8, 15. Decided on and reserved date of November 1 with menu to follow. Discussed having a buffet instead of meal.

Tack Swap reserved for Sunday, Feb. 7th 2010. Building rental will be the same as last year.

Club Reports - Dodge Co 4-H - there were 156 entries in the Youth Fun Show. The gymkhana classes were run for the fair show. Judges clinic went great at the fairgrounds. The judge worked with the kids as a group, as wellas individually. For the fair show, some awards will be neck ribbons with medals. The center of the medals will be either the 4-H emblem or a horse head. There are 51 FFA & 4-H members showing at the fair. Some are speed only, some educational only, as well as some doing 2 or 3 areas including pleasure on Aug. 15. The model show will be Aug. 23 at 2pm in the Youth Building. Horse Council - Legislation on a wheel tax for carriages has been brought up again. Contact your Representatives as this not only affects the Amish, but anyone who drives a horse or pony. New ideas for newsletter or all online. Glacial Heritage Trail - nothing new. Waterloo area still trail minded. Formed committee for unwanted horses.

Next meeting - Sept. 1 at 7:30 at Culvers in Waupun. (Note meeting location has been changed to Sackett Ranch due to meeting room remodeling at Culvers)

Meeting Adjourned.

SSA Committee Chairperson Needed!

In order for DCHA to continue to have successful Stallion Service Auctions, we are in need of a current DCHA member to step up and chair the SSA committee.

This person's responsibilities would include selling ads for the catalog, compliling stallion information, and getting catalog info to the newsletter editor for printing and posting online.

There will be additional DCHA members to help out with this project, so don't worry that you would be doing everything yourself, but we do need someone to head this project.

Any current DCHA member that is interested, please contact Kevin Juliuson at (920)928-3714 or email kjclosequartrs@powerweb.net.

Ranch Show – by Diane Sackett

The successful July show was a very nice show despite the rain downpour at 5am. That might have kept some people from coming as the crowd was less than I expected after the numerous calls and emails I fielded prior to the show. We had competitors drive up from Missouri to come and compete for national points!

I want to thank everyone that helped with this show. Crystal Creek Riders showed up in force to work the show, DCHA provided help also. The rules and paperwork for American Ranch Horse Association is a lot to abide by but there was very little grumbling from anyone, and I am still receiving compliments from spectators that they really enjoyed our show and hope it will be held again next year.

Camp Pow Wow - by Diane Sackett

Crystal Creek Riders visited Camp Pow Wow in July. The horses visited too! Camp Pow Wow is a camp for disabled or handicapped youth. Many of the youth never have a chance to be near a horse much less ride one!

The excitement builds all week as the counselors prep them for the horses to visit. Over 30 brave riders usually needed some help to mount up, some needed a counselor to ride with them to keep them in the saddle. There is such excitement as they actually ride a horse! The horses bring out the best of the youth. One girl that never talks or socializes ‘talked’ her whole ride, others found their courage to pet a horse. The highlight of the evening for me was after the group photo one young boy came over to my horse and stood next to him, gently stroking his muzzle, and then laid his cheek alongside of the horse nose and said “thank you” in a quiet voice. Priceless.

We had 6 horses for the honorable duty of carrying the riders on a short trail thru the woods and camp. Stretch, Mister,(courtesy of Diane Sackett) Sonny, Bingo, (courtesy of Barb and Gary Cross) Gold, (courtesy of Karen Meekma and handled by Lori Helmer) and Clint (courtesy of Elaine Gauthier) were very loved and praised by all the riders, including the counselors! Thanks also to the extra handlers for assisting riders to mount up and stay in the saddle - Kathy Gunderson, Tina Conley, Darlene Woulle, Karen Reider, Jan Pieper.

It was for sure an evening of rewards for everyone involved.
................................................................................................................................................................
P.S. A Thank You note sent to Gary Cross following the event-
Hi, Gary

Please express our deepest appreciation to your colleagues for the beautiful and incredible gift they have given to our campers. Your group’s thoughtfulness, generosity and compassion have given dozens of children and adults with disabilities an experience they will NEVER forget…truly one of the high points of their lifelong experiences!

Thank you for your leadership and compassion. We hope to see you at camp again next year

USPC D Rally

Elizabeth Affeld of Juneau, and her horse Lady, placed second the weekend of July 17-19 in their first Lakeshore Region Pony Club D Rally held at Wisconsin Equestrian Center at DePere. Rally is a three phase event, with the competitors riding dressage, cross country, and stadium jumping. Affeld was on a scramble team, which was made up of competitors from two other pony clubs and a stable manager. She trains at Kuenzi Equestrian Pony Club Riding Center located at Beaver Dam.

The United States Pony Clubs, Inc. (USPC) was founded in 1954 as a nonprofit national youth organization to teach riding and horsemanship through a formal educational program.
Many of the nation’s top equestrians, including most of our Olympic Equestrian team members,
have Pony Club roots. Members range in age from as young as 4 through age 21.

Activities are English-riding based, and members ride both horses and ponies, depending on the size of the rider and the discipline in which s/he is competing.
All Pony Club competition is team competition, much like the Olympic games, where members
learn the importance of cooperation and teamwork.
